I am George Zimmerman

“Opinions founded on prejudice are always sustained with the greatest of violence.”
Francis Jeffrey
Close your eyes and imagine with me our shared belief in safe neighborhoods, the Second Amendment, pro activism, and respect for law enforcement. Continue to imagine the place you come to revere as a safe haven is that no more, law enforcement, judicial system has failed to recognize the severity of the threat. What is left for you to do but your God given right to protect you and your love ones: so you buy a gun, weeks and months pass without any altercations in your pristine surroundings. Then one day your life is in jeopardy and you pull the trigger. Now imagine that person is black….

20130719-165503.jpg
That person is Marissa Alexander of Jacksonville Florida, mother of three who at the time of this case gave birth to her third child, who was married to an abusive husband. That law enforcement has arrested on domestic violence charges and the courts freed after making these comments in his disposition “I got five baby mammas, and I [hit] every last one of them except for one.” (powers, daily beast) The estranged ex-husband Mr.Gray attacks the victim in the garage of her home, fearing for her life Marissa takes out her legally registered gun and fires a warning shot in the air. No one is hit or hurt yet she sits in a Florida prison sentenced to 20 years, lost custody of her children, and her family is not allowed to visit her children. Where is the fairness of Stand Your Ground was not this the reason the law was created to protect an individual in their home, their castle, their domain. Or is the spirit of the law only intended for a race other then African American or for that matter any skin color that makes this country the melting pot that it is. In wake of the grave injustice of the death of Trayvon Martin an the acquittal of George Zimmerman, this law needs to be revisited and stricken from the books. Which maybe near impossible in a very conservative republican state, an NRA sponsored bill, but not even trying does no justice for Mr. Martin, Ms. Alexander, or our nation as a whole.

Pregnant Boy Images Used to Deter Teen Pregnancy

June 11, 2013 in Life and Times, News

teen pregnancy

The city of Chicago’s Department of health has launched an ad campaign aimed at young teens in attempt to scare them out of having sex at a young age, which may lead to teen pregnancy.  The Images of pregnant teenage boys has been put up at many locations around the city.  CDPH Commissioner Dr. Bechara Choucair. “These ads work to increase education and awareness which will in turn help reduce the number of teenage pregnancies in Chicago.” Chicago’s teen birth rate decreased 33 percent, but it’s still one of the highest in the nation.

(http://chicagohealth77.org) Reports: From 2000 to 2008, there was a 25% decline in the birth rate for Chicago’s teens ages 15–19 (fig. 1). However, Chicago’s teen birth rate has consistently exceeded the statewide and national rates during the past eight years. In 2008, the Chicago rate was 57% higher than the U.S. rate. The declining trend masks huge racial and ethnic disparities. In 2007 (the most recent year Chicago birth statistics are available for by race/ethnicity), the live birth rate among Black and Hispanic/Latino teens ages 15–19 years are 6.9 and 6.1 times higher than among Whites. Over 95% of Chicago’s teen births in 2007 occurred among Black and Hispanic/Latina females.  These ads are gaining attention on social media sites, some posting the pictures as humorous other people are discussing this matter seriously using #unexpected.

Bank Employee Accidentally Transfers Millions of Dollars

June 11, 2013 in Life and Times, News

sleeping-work

An a employee at a German bank payed the price for sleeping on the job by being terminated.  This is a small price to pay considering he was actually terminated for accidentally transferring millions of dollars to a retiree’s bank account.  The worker was supposed to transfer about 62.40 to the account in question but accidentally fell a sleep on his keyboard, his head resting on the 2 button which consequently transferred 222 million euro ($293 million).  The case was brought to court by another employee who was supposed to supervise the transaction but let the mistake go unnoticed.  The supervisor was fired but believing he was wrongfully terminated, brought the case to court in order to be reinstated at the bank.  The judge ruled that the man should have his job back.  No word on what happened to the sleeping banker after being fired.

Waka Flaka Concert Ends a Marriage

June 10, 2013 in Life and Times, Music

r-WAKA-FLOCKA-large570

A 53 Year old Social Media advisor from Florida isn’t blaming the rappers concert for being the nail in the coffin that ended her marriage but instead thanking him.  After becoming acquainted with the hip hop star on line she had a new found interest in hip hop music and even began writing about it in her blog posts.  Her husband on the other hand did not care for the music itself nor did he like the fact that his wife was taking an interest in it.  It all came to a head when Waka Flaka was coming to do a concert in her town.  Her husband was adamant that he did not want her there stating that “many black men would be putting their bodies in close proximity to hers.” Also, “since she was so enamored of Waka, if Waka asked, she might go out clubbing with him and end up doing something she’d regret.  The woman eventually filed for divorce feeling that she could not be with someone who did not respect her passion.  A few excerpts from the woman’s blog can be seen below

Now, my ex-husband and I had always had problems. We were on a typical bad relationship roller coaster; good times followed by bad times followed by good times and so on. Finally, the good times were just too far between and although the bad times subsided too, we fell into a very polite and civilized existence. That is, until Waka came to town.

My ex NEVER liked rap, my interest in rap and rap artists, or my blogging about rap. When I knew Waka was coming to Ft. Lauderdale, my husband basically said he wouldn’t prevent me from going (as if) but he didn’t want me to go. When I didn’t immediately agree not to go, things got worse. He basically implied that (and I’m paraphrasing) “many black men would be putting their bodies in close proximity to mine.” Also, “since I was so enamored of Waka, if Waka asked, I might go out clubbing with him and end up doing something I’d regret.”

So, basically, the experience with my ex of the Waka concert made my mind up for me. It was time to make that break, and live my life without looking over my shoulder or being beholden to a man who didn’t appreciate me or the interesting turns my life might take. We’ve been divorced for a few months now. I couldn’t be happier.

The moral of this story? Don’t EVER let anyone else keep you from your bliss, no matter what that may be. If someone truly loves you, they will come along for the adventure. Otherwise, get the heck out and live your life to the fullest. Believe me, you’ll sleep better at night and have a song in your heart.

The song in MY heart will always be a song by Waka Flocka Flame.

Top 23 TV Show Intros (The Classics)

June 4, 2013 in Life and Times

The TV’s in the lunch area and the lounge are both set on stations that play classic or “old school” tv shows; personally I think its because one of the interns misplaced the remote, but I digress. We though it would be cool to compile a list of some of the best TV show openings (intros). We listed em but we cannot possibly add the term “of all time” to the list as not to face a barrage of backlash regarding our choices. But check ’em and let us know if there’s another one that should make the list.

Horrifying Results of Bullying

June 2, 2013 in Life and Times

bullying-essay-635

In recent years we’ve seen more evidence of the tragic outcomes of adolescent depression and self destructive behavior of children caused by torment at the hand of their peers.  This has resulted in many campaigns, new policies and advertising aimed at stopping bullying (cyber or any other kind) in schools.  Even an “Anti-Bullying Day” has been created. It is a day celebrated during the last Wednesday of the month February in Canada, which originally started as a protest against a bullying incident at a Nova Scotia high school (Central Kings Rural High School). On this day, people participate wear pink to symbolize a stand against bullying. Read below about some terrible and avoidable results of teens and pre-teens being bullied.

Felicia Garcia was a young girl from Staten Island new york who felt she was left with no other option but suicide after her school mates tormented her by circulation vicious rumors about her. Here is a screen shot of her last tweet ever which showed her dispair.garcia_tweet

Gabrielle Molina was a 12 year old middle school student who committed suicide by hanging herself inside her family’s Queens Village NY home.  The note left behind was one of apology to her family and a vague explination of what lead her to do what she did, apparently a victim of bullying from a classmate become to much for the young girl to take.

Karen Ward was an 11 year old girl from Albuquerque NM, who was found by her parents after hanging her self in her home.  The young girl may have suffered from mental illness that went unnoticed by her family.

We don’t often notice the result that ridicule will have on others and young people are even less aware of those effects. As a middle school teacher I often advised the students on the difference between harmless jokes and making fun of someone.  Children and teens may be mean and often purposely so but they cannot possibly understand that the outcome of this type of behavior might have. The idea that kids will be kids needs is wrong, the stories above clearly show that kids have taken a measure that should not be an option for anyone let alone a young person.

11 Year Old Boy Has Sex Change

May 24, 2013 in Life and Times

Tammy Lobel’s hormones are being blocked by an implant on the inside of the 11-year-old’s upper left arm, which must be replaced once a year.

Ms Moreno explained: ‘In other words, she will stay as a pre-pubescent boy until she decides and we feel that she can make this decision about surgery.’

His parents say the hormone treatment will give him time to figure out if he wants to fully transition to being female or go through puberty as a boy.

By age 14 or 15 the device will need to be removed so that Tammy can go through puberty, Ms Moreno said.

If he chooses to stop taking the drugs, he will undergo natural male puberty at a later stage and his future fertility would not be impacted.

Should their son decide to transition to an adult female, he can take female hormones as well, which would raise his voice, allow him to grow breasts and develop other feminine physical characteristics.

The young boy is an adopted son of a lesbian couple, the couple says that he was not pressured into making the change.
